Weaving the intangible
This design project centers on the craft of weaving, a practice that demands training and relies on patterns determined by a mathematical order of lifting the heddles. The process is time-intensive and physically demanding, requiring weavers to develop an embodied memory for controlling the loom.
The project presents a design that augments the traditional handloom with visual programming technology, producing digital visualizations as tangible reflections of the weaving process, to make the complexity of weaving visible to a broader audience and to offer weavers a system to document their process, capturing data directly from the loom to support collaboration between digital platforms and the weaving community.
This project taught me the reflective transformative design approach by beginning the design process with making, and provided me with skills in electronics and data visualization.
