The Bike Board

This project explores how design can reduce waste and resource consumption in the bike context. It aimed to create a toolkit encouraging reuse, sharing, and repair instead of replacement, using a practice-oriented approach. The study included fieldwork at The Bike Kitchen in Amsterdam, where students and residents repair bikes with expert guidance. Methods involved observation, interviews, and a design probe to understand visitors’ experiences and perceptions. Insights highlighted the role of materials, meanings, and skills. The study concluded that insights from the probe and other methods could help modify TBK to promote learning-based practices that slow, narrow, or close resource loops.

The project taught me how to integrate psychological theories into the practice of design, utilizing design probes, case studies, and practice-oriented design.
